Twelve years ago we got a new furnace. Since then, when the furnace starts up, often, there's a loud banging in the pipes. Sometimes there is another loud noise that sounds like a train coming into the station. A friend who works in industrial safety told me this is a steam hammer problem and can be very dangerous, despite the fact that it's been going on for years. An acquaintance who works with heating systems says ir's just a nuisance, and aside from the noise there's no need to fix it. Both of them say it's a result of water not draining from the pipes. Should I be worried?
